Why this exists
Every packing guide ranking on Google today was written for someone in the northern hemisphere. The seasons are inverted, the flight times are wrong, the plug advice assumes a plug you do not have, and the shopping links go to a country you do not live in.
An Australian summer trip to Europe departs in our winter. You pack in Melbourne in May, in a jumper, for six weeks of thirty-five degrees. Nobody writes for that.
What makes the advice different
Every item in every kit has a sentence next to it explaining why it is there. Not marketing copy — a reason. “Type I to Type A adapters are genuinely hard to find at airports outside Australasia” is the kind of thing you only know if you have stood in a Japanese convenience store at eleven at night.
That sentence is the whole product. Anything else is a packing cube you could buy anywhere.
What we will not do
- Overclaim on health products. Our compression socks page says what the Cochrane evidence actually supports and stops there. Our RFID wallet is sold as a wallet, because contactless skimming is rare and your liability is capped anyway.
- Sell you a water filter for Japan. The tap water there is excellent. Filter bottles appear only in the kits for places where the water genuinely is not safe, and the build refuses to publish a kit that breaks that rule.
- Use countdown timers or fake scarcity. No “3 people are viewing this”, no “only 2 left” unless it is true. The one countdown anywhere on this site is on a festival kit, and the date is real.
- Pretend we stock things we do not. A few products are controlled by their brand and we cannot buy them wholesale. We link out and label it rather than leave a hole in the kit.
- Publish AI-written travel content. The category is drowning in it, and it is why every guide now reads the same. Everything here is dated and updated by a person who went.
The photography
We film our own. Gear in use in unglamorous places — a hostel bathroom, a night bus, an airport floor at 5am, a laundrette in Lisbon. The category default is aspiration. Ours is competence.
Where a photograph does not exist yet, you will see a plain branded block rather than a stock image of a product we do not sell. That is deliberate.
