The UK is a familiar trip that catches people out on exactly one thing, and it is the plug.
Type G is not Type C
Britain and Ireland use the large three-pin Type G plug. A European Type C adapter — the one that works everywhere from Portugal to Poland — will not fit it. If you are doing Europe and then London, you need both, and it is the kind of thing you discover at eleven at night on the first evening.
Rain is a constant, not an event
It can rain in any month, and it usually arrives with wind. A packable shell beats an umbrella for the same reason it does in New Zealand: an umbrella only works in still rain.
Summer heat is now a real thing
British summers now reach the mid-thirties, and almost no accommodation has air conditioning. It is a genuinely recent change and the building stock has not caught up.
