The USA is Australia's fifth-biggest destination and it is declining slightly, but it remains the trip where the specifics differ most from home.
The locks are not optional
Any padlock on checked luggage into or within the United States must be TSA-approved. Screening staff open non-approved locks by cutting them off, and they are entirely within their rights to do so. This is the single most common avoidable cost on an American trip.
120 volts is half of what you are used to
An adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage. A hair dryer or straightener that is not explicitly dual-voltage will run weakly, overheat, or simply not work.
The price on the shelf is not the price
Sales tax is added at the register and varies by state and sometimes by city. Tipping is not included, is not optional in practice, and runs 18–20% on restaurant bills. Budget accordingly, because the difference over two weeks is not small.
